Karlsruher Institute of Technology - Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS)

ITAS generates knowledge about the design and effects of technological developments and provides alternatives for collective action. Techno-economic, environmentally related and social questions are its research focus. Consulting science and technology policy as well as offering orienting knowledge for the design of socio-technical systems are central aims.

ITAS is the largest research institute in Germany which focusses on technology assessment and systems analysis in theory and in practice. Mainly, adverse side-effects of “advanced technologies” are investigated. In parliamentary policy advice, ITAS is one of the leading institutions in Europe. The Office of Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag (TAB) is run by ITAS since its foundation in 1990. As member of the “European Technology Assessment Group” it consults the European Parliament since October 2005. At ITAS, research is divided in four research areas (see also http://www.itas.kit.edu/english/index.php)

At ITAS, nuclear waste management has been subject of research and consultation for over ten years. Political decision-making and the societal conflicts around nuclear waste management in Germany and Switzerland are the focus of our research activities. Being part of ENTRIA gives us the possibility to continue this work with enhanced commitment and broaden its scope through the interdisciplinary cooperation within the project.
